Judge Tom Reavley is one of five judges as of 2021 to serve on the Supreme Court of Texas, followed by service on the Federal Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. Judge Reavley served forty-one years on the Fifth Circuit and was the oldest serving federal judge at the time of his death in 2020. Reavley was born in Quitman, Texas, attended the University of Texas at Austin, and then served in the United States Navy. He earned a law degree from Harvard Law School and a Master of Laws from the University of Virginia School of Law. Reavley served as a Dallas assistant district attorney, Nacogdoches County attorney, and Texas Secretary of State. After engaging in private practice, he began a long and distinguished judicial tenure. He first served on the 167th Judicial District in Austin, on the Supreme Court of Texas, and as Special Judge of the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. He finished his career as a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, where he served until his death. |
