Hon. Tom Clark
|
Tom Clark was
born in Dallas and graduated from the University of Texas School of Law after
serving in World War I. He practiced law
in Dallas with his father and then joined the district attorney’s office. Later, he accepted a position with the United
States Department of Justice and thereafter served as Attorney General. He then was confirmed as an associate justice
of the Supreme Court of the United States; and, during his service, he voted
with the Court’s majority in the landmark case of Brown v. Board of Education.
He also wrote the majority opinion in Mapp v. Ohio, which held the Fourth Amendment’s prohibition against
unreasonable searches and seizures applies to the states through the Fourteenth
Amendment.
After retiring
from the Supreme Court after his son was appointed Attorney General, he headed
a commission of the American Bar Association to study the lawyer disciplinary
system. His efforts ultimately led to
the drafting of the Model Code of Professional Conduct. Justice Clark served as the first director of
the Federal Judicial Center, as a visiting judge on several United States
Courts of Appeals, and chair of the Board of Directors for the American
Judicature Society. Justice Clark
co-founded the National Judicial College and chaired the Joint Committee on the
More Effective Administration of Justice. |
