Hon. Shirley Butts

Shirley Butts was
born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas, after which she traveled to California to
attend California State University, graduating with honors. She then received her Juris Doctorate from
the University of Texas Law School and an advanced law degree from the
University of Virginia. She initially
specialized in criminal law, beginning her career at the Tarrant County
District Attorney’s Office and ultimately became Chief of the Civil
Division. Afterwards, she maintained a
private law practice for 18 years in Fort Worth and San Antonio. She also taught at St. Mary’s University
School of Law for several years before being appointed as an associate justice
on the Fourth Court of Appeals – becoming the first female justice on that
court. She was reelected twice. During her time on the bench, Justice Butts
influenced and helped draft the Court’s Local Rules; and, during her
distinguished career, she received numerous accolades from both local and
state-wide legal organizations. |
