Hon. Adele Hedges

Adele Hedges was born in Orange, Texas, and obtained a degree in French literature before obtaining her Juris Doctorate from the University of Houston Law Center, graduating summa cum laude. She practiced as an attorney with several law firms and served as general counsel with a real estate company and bank before election to the bench. She served 11 years as a justice on the First Court of Appeals and was then appointed Chief Justice to the Fourteenth Court of Appeals. She then returned to the practice of law, specializing in litigation, appeals, mediation, and arbitration. Chief Justice Hedges was instrumental in pushing forward the e-filing system and was highly involved (if not chiefly responsible) for the outstanding renovations to Houston’s 1910 courthouse, which now houses both the First and Fourteenth Courts of Appeals. Chief Justice Hedges was an active legal author and speaker, was honored as Appellate Judge of the Year, and was named the UH Law Center Alumnae of the Year.
