Hon. Samuel D. Johnson, Jr.

Judge Samuel D. Johnson, Jr., served as both a justice on the Supreme Court of Texas and as a judge on the Federal Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, one of a select group of five judges to serve on both benches. Judge Johnson also served at all three levels of the state judiciary – district court, intermediate appellate court, and Supreme Court. Born in Hubbard, Texas, Judge Johnson served in the U.S. Army during World War II and then earned a business degree from Baylor University and his law degree from the University of Texas School of Law. After being in private practice, he served as the county attorney for Hill County, Texas, and the district attorney of Hillsboro. He then began his 40-plus-year tenure with the judiciary, serving as judge of the 66th Judicial District Court in Houston, as a justice of the Fourteenth Court of Appeals, and as a justice of the Supreme Court of Texas. He finished his career as a judge of the Fifth Circuit, where he served until his death.
